What happens when we get so wrapped up in media that we lose our perspective? In his book , Pastor Craig Groeschel of Life Church outlines his ten commandments for Christians on social media. The 8th commandment is “Do not use social media to fuel temptations.”

This commandment is all about what Christians can do to safeguard themselves from stumbling across hurtful or provocative things on the internet and social media.

Children who have access to the internet are being exposed to things like pornography on average as young as seven years of age.

“Most parents just don’t understand, especially with social media, how easy it is for kids to come across something that is inappropriate.” – Craig Groeschel

Social media platforms that are typically thought of as harmless have become breeding grounds for inappropriate content. It is important for parents to educate themselves and understand where their children can fall into trouble.

What can I do?

It is important to safeguard any electronic devices that have access to the internet, even a TV.

“To the best of my technical ability, there’s no way to see something that’s inappropriate.”

It’s better to be safe than regret things later on. Parents should error on the side of limiting their children’s freedom online as opposed to increasing their ability to be exposed to inappropriate content.

Craig admits that even he has filters on his internet browsers.

“Why would I want to manage a temptation in the future if I can eliminate it today?”

Don’t wait until the temptation is knocking at your door. Be proactive and set up defenses to keep inappropriate content out of your life and the lives of your children.

“I would rather be wise and safe on the front end than vulnerable and embarrassed and do something sinful to hurt me or my family or my witness on the back end.”

Today, ask God to help you understand the steps you can take to safeguard your heart and the hearts of those under your roof from the threat of temptation. Listen for His gentle, guiding voice and when He does instruct you, take action!
