Spring is a great time to get outdoors, and in many parts of the country, a welcome opportunity to plan and spend extended time in the milder outdoors after the harshness of winter.

If your community has bike paths, the traffic on those trails is increasing. It’s not just cyclists, but skaters, walkers, joggers, and whole families—including strollers. This is a great time of year to get outside, and a few basic rules will keep everyone safe as we share the busy pathways.

  • Always stay to the right. On the path, only move into the left lane to pass. Even if you are traveling as a group, always stay to the right.
  • Always pass others on the left. Do this by slowing down, speaking out a warning like “Passing on your left” and waiting for a reaction before passing.
  • Always travel at a safe speed. If the traffic is too slow for you on the bike trail, consider an alternative route for your travel.
  • Faster users should yield to slower users.
  • Be careful when crossing streets and passing driveways. Always watch for traffic and try make eye contact, if possible, with drivers so they are aware of your presence.
  • When stopping, move off the pathway.

So grab a friend, your family, or enjoy some solo time on your bike. Make sure your bicycle tires are properly inflated, remember to always wear a properly fitting helmet, and then head outdoors and have a great time!
