We are often quick to criticize another person. We are often hasty to point out what we don’t like in their life, but when we ask the right question to the right person at the right time, that can become a defining moment in our own lives.

Within Scripture, we see some of the most powerful questions ever asked. For example, What must I do to be saved, and Who will you serve today? One place to start asking questions is in your relationships. The Bible says husbands love your wives. That is not a suggestion, but a command. How you choose to respond to that command can become a defining moment in your marriage. I challenge you to ask your wife, “What one thing can I do in the next 30 days that will let you know that I love you?” That question can redefine your marriage, if you take the appropriate action in response to her answer.

As a counselor, I’ve sat many times who are clueless about asking the right questions to their kids, to their spouses and to their coworkers. When was the last time you asked a really profound question of someone in order to have them share something really meaningful in their life with you?

You ask people how they are doing, in the form of a greeting, not really expecting much more than a simple “good,” or “fine.” Even when we’re not fine many of us say we are fine. When was the last time you sat down with a person you knew was going through something and you took the time to ask a question:

  • Will you share something that I could pray with you about?
  • What’s one thing that I can do today to help you in the next week?

If someone asks a question, it draws us into them. Questions are profound and they’re powerful.

I’m convinced if God is going to use us, and we’re going to be intentional at a defining moment when we ask a profound question, we’ve got to stop, sit down, take some time and really seek what God revealed to us in that moment.
